No Pants? Big Problem.

27 Mar

The Super Bowl is infamous for its outrageous commercials.

What’s funny is that despite all attempts by companies to be unique, year after year, commercials converge around oddly similar themes and ideas.  It’s as though companies all go to the same soothsayer, who magically predicts what idea will be most memorable in a crystal ball.  And like every self-fulfilling prophecy, the prediction comes true. The ideas are often quite memorable.

The catch?  Viewers remember the commercials as a conglomerate.  The power of each individual idea and its connection to a particular company is completely eroded.

Such was the case for Dockers and CareerBuilder.com.  Both aired commercials that featured pants-less actors.  What’s worse, the two commercials were aired consecutively, with one image of half-dressed men and women instantly replacing another.

The flub was not amusing to Dockers or CareerBuilder: they feel the mix-up confused consumers.

Dockers is being compensated.  CareerBuilder is not: Its ad ran first.
