Happily ever after does not exist. And that’s okay. The beauty of happiness lies in the knowledge that it doesn’t last forever. Its impermanence forces each of us to savor it while it’s here and hope for it when it’s not. Our founding fathers had the right idea when they coined the phrase, “the pursuit of happiness” to convey the never-ending race to take hold of happiness and the continued hope that one day, with enough work, sweat and tears, it will surrender and be ours once and for all. There are two sides to every story. Even more to every relationship. I could play the victim. So could he. The reality is neither of us is innocent. Don’t worry. He doesn’t read this blog. In fact, in the five months we dated, he had never read a single word I wrote. That was part of the problem. He saw my work as a reporter, freelance writer, etc., as something that simply stole time away from him. As things of envy, not objects of admiration. This quote from some forgotten film haunted me as I resolved to end yet another romance.
It happens over and over again. Shonda meets X. X likes Shonda. And then things get complicated. I guess it’s my business genes, but I hate the thought of investing time and energy into someone that I simply can’t imagine growing up and old with.
